Sheldon I. Dorenfest, C.P.A., M.B.A., President of the Dorenfest Group, is one of the world's foremost experts in health care systems improvement. He has consulted with the governments of the USA, France, England, Australia, and Canada on health care issues. As President and CEO of Sheldon I. Dorenfest & Associates, Ltd. from 1976 to 2004, Mr. Dorenfest personally directed the research involved in compiling THE DORENFEST INTEGRATED HEALTHCARE DELIVERY SYSTEM+ (IHDS+) DATABASETM and its predecessor THE DORENFEST 3000+ DATABASETM until its sale to HIMSS Analytics in 2004. Mr. Dorenfest now is a member of the Board of Directors of HIMSS. He recently created, in conjunction with the HIMSS Foundation, The Dorenfest Institute for Health Information Technology Research and Education to provide free data to universities, students, and government agencies around the world. Mr. Dorenfest has personally consulted with over 300 hospitals on a worldwide basis to help them strategize, select and implement improved information systems. He has also worked with over 200 HIT suppliers to help them improve their understanding of the HIT market, shape new product strategies and better serve their customers.

Prior to 1976, he was the Founder, President, and Chief Executive Officer of Compucare and Director of Corporate Business Consulting Services for Abbott Laboratories. From 1962 to 1969, he served in a variety of positions at Abbott Laboratories, a major marketer of healthcare products. As Director, Corporate Business Consulting Services at Abbott, he led an internal consulting group that dealt with major business acquisitions, divestitures, and improvements. As Assistant to the President of the Abbott Hospital Division, he formulated and implemented major portions of the division?s strategic and product plans.

A frequent contributor to professional journals in the financial, data processing, and healthcare fields, Mr. Dorenfest has been a contributing editor to Modern Healthcare, Health Management Technology, and the National Report on Computers and Health. He has also spoken before numerous professional groups and meetings (national IBM user groups, ACHE, AHA, AHIMA, ECHO, HFMA, HIMSS, HISSG, SCAMC, and VHA). He is listed in Who's Who in Finance and Industry in the United States and Who's Who in the Midwest. Mr. Dorenfest has been widely published in industry publications such as Health Management Technology, Healthcare Executives, Healthcare Informatics, Hospitals and Health Networks, Modern Healthcare, and National Report on Computers and Health.

Mr. Dorenfest holds a B.S. (with honors) in accountancy from the University of Illinois and an M.B.A. from Northwestern University. He is also a certified public accountant.

 

Wei-Tih Cheng, Strategic Advisor

As the now retired Senior VP and chief information officer of insurance giant Aetna (Hartford, CT), Dr. Cheng worked to change the way that the health insurer approaches its information technology investment. In 2001, he was recruited by Aetna Inc. to be Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer (CIO) as part of a turnaround team. Within two years, the company became profitable again. In four years, the company’s stock price had increased tenfold. Before he joined Aetna in April 2001, he spent fifteen years at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (New York, NY) where he served as VPIS. During his 15+ years tenure, Dr. Cheng helped advance the Center’s information technology greatly. And before that he was with IBM, first as an engineer and later as a senior programming manager. In 1999, he was voted CIO of the Year. He is a former Chairman of the Board for College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME), serving CIOs in the industry in their IT management and career growth challenges. He was a former member of the American Red Cross national board.


Michael Cohen, Strategic Advisor

Mr. Michael Cohen, President of MRC Consulting Group (MRCCG), is an expert in the state of the art in healthcare information systems. Prior to founding MRCCG in 1998 he was vice president at Sheldon I. Dorenfest & Associates, a senior manager at Arthur Young & Company (now Cap Gemini Ernst and Young), a marketing support specialist at McDonnell Douglas Automation Company (now McKesson), a manager at Arthur Andersen and Company (now Accenture), and an administrator at Cook County Hospital. He specializes in helping health care organizations to get more value out of their information technology (I.T.) investments. He has enabled scores of healthcare clients to make good I.T. decisions, with widespread organizational support, on time/on budget success, favorable contractual terms and significant operational improvements. He is an expert in the state of the art in healthcare information systems throughout the world. Other areas of expertise include systems planning, vendor evaluation and selection, contract negotiations, systems implementation management, product review and analysis, I.T. management, project management and general problem solving.
